Associate Professor Madeleine Mukeshimana is a Nurse educator and leader since 2011 at the University of Rwanda, school of Nursing and Midwifery. She holds Doctorate in Community Health Nursing from University of KwaZulu Natal(UKZN), Bachelors and Masters in Nursing Management from UKZN and advanced diploma in Mental Health Nursing from University of Rwanda. She has been Postgraduate Coordinator, Deputy Dean, then Dean of the school since 2016 to 2021. She has also worked in the University of Rwanda Directorate of Research since February 2019 to November 2019.Currently, she is the Chair of the Research committee in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Rwanda and she is a post doctorate researcher at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Prof Madeleine has been involved in the development of new and review of existing nursing programs in Rwanda and has been involved in the review of different health care policies and strategies.

Prof Madeleine has been participating in different activities that promote gender equality and equity in Rwanda, for example she is a consultant with CERTA foundation (The Center for Justice and Advocacy and The center for Law and Innovation, these are two centers that contribute towards the eradication of Gender-Based-Violence (GBV) and fostering Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) in Rwanda.

Madeleine was inducted in Sigma Theta Tau International in 2016, she was recently a member of the 23rd ICN congress scientific committee, she has been trained for Leadership for change/ODENNA program by ICN and she is active member of Rwanda nurses and Midwives union as well as Rwanda Nursing Council.

Madeleine’s contribution in Nursing research and advancement of nursing knowledge is through her active participation in different research activities nationally and internationally and through peer-reviewed articles. Madeleine is a national and international research reviewer, she is a reviewer of Rwanda Health journal,, external reviewer of University of KwaZulu Natal and a reviewer of University of South Africa (UNISA) , she also serves as member of different research scientific committees, she was the Chair of Scientific committee of African International Health conference, 2021, recently she served as a member of the 23rd ICN congress scientific committee, 2023. Currently Madeleine counts 33 research publications in peer reviewed journals, she a PI and a Co-PI of 8 ongoing research grants projects and co-investigator in 4 ongoing research grants projects. Madeleine is a Co-PI of a big international research project on sexual reproductive health services that incorporates 41 PIs (25 Faculty from School of Nursing and Midwifery and 16 from School of Medicine and pharmacy who received seeds grants in that project). She has also presented different findings in different National and international conferences. She adapted a Collaborative Care Model in Rwanda that improved the quality care of patients with comorbidities of mental health issues and medical issues.

Her daily tasks include teaching both nursing theory and practice, supervising postgraduate research students and mentoring students and junior faculty. Madeleine has supervised a total of 14 Master’s thesis whom the students completed their studies on time and graduated since 2016 until 2021. She has also supervised as a local supervisor one PhD whom the student completed and graduated. She is currently supervising 5 Master’s thesis and 5 PhD dissertations as main supervisor while she also currently supervises (as UR local supervisor of UR affiliates) 2 PhD dissertations, one from Ontario University and the second from University of Illinois Chicago.   Madeleine has taught and she is still teaching different modules in the postgraduate of School of Nursing and Midwifery including Advanced Research Methods, Global Patterns of Health and Illness, Quality improvement Care and Strengthening Nursing. In Undergraduate, Madeleine has taught modules including Fundamentals of community health Nursing, Advanced community health Nursing, mental health Nursing, Nursing Philosophy, Leadership, Management, Mentorship and Entrepreneurship.
