Oliva is a highly experienced midwife with over 20 years of clinical, professional, and academic expertise. She has worked on health systems of low and middle-income countries and is a member of the Safe Motherhood Technical Working Group at Rwanda Biomedical Center. Oliva is responsible for Continuous Professional Development at Rwanda Association of Midwives, and has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and community outreach. She is has been developed and taught different modules for nursing and midwifery students. These include: Normal midwifery, abnormal midwifery, Women’s health, advanced new born health care, Research and Innovation in Midwifery, Evidence Based Practice project in Midwifery, & Advanced research methods.

Oliva has been involved in research supervision for undergraduate students for several years, and currently focuses the research supervision for both Master’s and PhD students. Her clinical experience includes working in maternity units in Rwanda. She has presented at numerous national, regional, and international conferences, focusing on nursing and midwifery education as well as maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. In terms of consultancy, Oliva has worked on several projects, including a research project on midwife-led birthing centers in low- and middle-income countries, analyzing the midwifery workforce in East and Southern Africa, and developing and implementing Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning for the 50,000 Happy Birthdays and More Happy Birthday projects in Rwanda. Oliva has been recently appointed by the Director General of the World Health Organization as member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts (STAGE), FOR Maternal, new born, child, adolescent health and nutrition.
